Joseph (Joe) Hennessy, R.I.P.

Joe was involved in the group for many years, and served on the committee a number of times. He wrote In Holy Matrimony, which the group performed in 1996, and was the author of a range of plays and novels. In recent years, he served the group through his work front of house. Joe passed away in June 2009. May he rest in peace. The piece below was written by Joe for a biography requested several years ago. I have left it as it was written.

" Born in New York, Joe Hennessy was educated in Ireland. Upon finishing school he went to work in the Airline Industry, first with Seaboard & Western Airlines in Shannon, Intercontinental in Luxembourg and New York, and with Shannon Air Ltd in which he was instrumental in setting up. This was one of the first Independent Irish, non-scheduled carriers to show the Irish flag in airports all round the world. Shannon Air not alone flew pilgrims to Lourdes, but also Muslims to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia so they could go on the Hajj, their annual pilgrimage to Mecca. He also worked with Air America in Udorn Thailand for a number of years. Joe has written a number of novels and plays. His four children are now all married, and he is retired and living alone in the refurbished city of Angela's Ashes, Limerick Ireland. He enjoys, writing, walking, music and the company of some good friends."

The Social Service Man

Members of the traveling community have an in-depth  knowledge and take full advantage of the social service system within the Country.  Past experience has given them the ability to turn one child into three by having the one child, baptized in three different locations. This in turn allows them to obtain three different baptismal certificates for the one child each with a different Christian name. These in turn can be produced to the Government officials, resulting in their being able to obtain assistance for three rather than one child. This play goes on to humorously tell the day in the life of such a family, and the manner in which they can manipulate the system to further their own benefit. Not alone that but the play goes on to make all aware of their shrewd business acumen and their business ability. A friend of mine in Ocala Fl told me  that a fertile egg from a 'Tinker' pony costs  $30,000.00 (Thirty Thousand.) there .

Their one fear is the man from an Irish Government  Department who occasionally calls on them to make spot checks to insure that that they are getting what they are fully entitled in an environment befitting an Irish citizen  who is a member of the traveling community.

The Widower

Feeling that he is now their responsibility his three daughters set about making plans for their widowed father's future, with one suggesting that he should become part of a religious community since she feels he would be properly looked after.

She goes so far as to answer an advertisement in search of   'disciples' placed by a religious order in a newspaper.

Not alone does a priest come to their house but while there he meets a door to door sales man who happened by,  from whom he had purchased furniture in the past  and which he was  required to return  with a considerable  financial  loss  ensuing .

Shannon Die …Never. A Three Act  Comedy

Back in the 40's/50's the Irish Government made Shannon the airport of entry for all Airlines coming from the US. The reason for this was so that tourists coming into the Country would help the economy by visiting the West of Ireland which at that time did not have work to support the people of the area. With time and continuous lobbying from both the US airlines and large industry in Dublin the Government revoked the original order made and allowed Airlines to fly directly from the US in Dublin. The staff at Shannon on seeing this decides to take the law into their own hands and make their own arrangements to insure they would have continued employment there. After several staff meetings as to what should be done a proposal is made that they should build a space ship to go out into space and find their own tourists to bring back to the Shannon area. As it happened one of the locals had a sister who lived in the States with a brainy son working in Cape Kennedy. With drawings made at college by the man now working in Cape Kennedy they commence to build the ship. A colleague rented one of the factories at the Industrial Estate in Shannon on the pretext of his company going into the button manufacturing industry purely for the export market. This pleased both the Irish Government and the people with the Shannon Development Company since the purpose of the Industrial Estate at the Airport was so that good manufactured there could be air freighted from Shannon worldwide.

Holy Matrimony. A One Act Comedy

In an effort to encourage candidates for priesthood Rome decides to revoke its law of celibacy and allow Catholic priests to marry.

However now that clergy had permission to do something that had been talked about for so long none of the present clergy made a move to take advantage of the situation. The local Bishop suggested to one of his curate's Fr Bill Molloy that he should set an example by going out and getting himself a wife knowing that such a suggestion would be looked on as an order.

Premiered by the Quarry Players in the One Act Play Drama Festival 1997

It came first place in the Limerick Contest, Second place in Doonbeg Co Clare and second place in the Shannon Airport Contest.

The Quarry Players then went on to perform the play in what could be termed as series of 'one night' stands in various pubs and hotels around Limerick City some of whom were Greenhills Hotel, Glentworth Hotel. Costello's, Riddlers, and the White House bars.

Another Amateur drama group performed the play to full houses for three nights at the Anglers Rest, Doonass, Limerick.
