John Anthony Murphy

From Limerick, John was a founder member of Island Theatre Company. Plays he has performed in include The Year of the Hiker, Sive, The Colleen Bawn, The Elephant Man, Biloxi Blues, Tent Meeting, Translations, Lovers, The Tempest, Hamlet, She Stoops to Conquer, Northern Star, Clouds, Pigtown, Woman in Mind (Island); Doctor Faustus, Home is the Hero, The Playboy of the Western World (Everyman Palace); Julius Caesar (Rattlebag); A Prime Location (Gallowglass); Romeo & Juliet (Blood in the Alley); Melty Mack, Hang-Gliding (Carpet); The Well of the Saints / The End of the Beginning (Big Telly); The Fisherman's Son (Belltable Hub). He was nominated as Best Actor in The Irish Times Theatre Awards for his role as ‘Fr. James Keane’ in Borrowed Robes (Island), and nominated as Best Actor in the Dublin Fringe Festival for ‘Connie’ in Rum and Raisin (Tall Tales). Film and TV includes: Angela's Ashes, Gangs of New York, Fair City and Tome Feenes.

As a writer, his one-woman show Smallone recently toured a number of small venues in West
Cork as part of Blood in the Alley's policy of bringing theatre to areas not generally served by touring
companies.
John has directed seven productions for Quarry Players Limerick: A Time Under Heaven, A Crucial Week in the Life of a Grocer's Assistant, The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Lovers at Versailles, Dolly West's Kitchen and By the Bog of Cats.
