Quarry Nab A Beauty
The Quarry Players Limerick, for their Spring Production, have acquired the rights to Martin McDonagh's Broadway smash hit "The Beauty Queen of Leenane". "Like all groups in the country we have waited for this play to be released and as it happened we were in the right place at the right time when the day came", said PRO, Pat Quinn. The play will go on in the Belltable Arts Centre on Monday March 19 and run for six nights. John Anthony Murphy will be directing this time. John is well know to city and national audiences for his many fine performances with the Island Theatre Company (in particular his award winning performance in "Borrowed Robes") and his part in movie "Angela's Ashes". This will be John's fourth play as director with the Quarry Players. The cast is indeed a very strong one and includes Jean Fay, Barbra Clinton and Jim Deery, all well known to Mid West audiences. Set design and construction will be in the very capable hands of John Ryan and his team.
This is an article which appeared in the play programme of 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane' in March 2001, outlining the history of the group. It was adapted by Michael Kearney, who is the current President of the group. This attempts to summarise the history of the group in two A5 pages, and has the touch of someone that has almost thirty years of experience with the Quarry Players.
