Portia Coughlan, by Marina Carr, was presented at the Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick, in November 1999 Directed by Michael Kearney
Below, is an article from the student newspaper, from 1999, reviewing our production of "Portia Coughlan". We have corrected the spelling. The review is naive, inherently incorrect and contradictory, but it shows how others see our productions. "...The second performance this week was the Quarry Players ’“Portia Coughlan”. Written by Miriam Carr it is a tale of incest, death and madness. The Quarry Players, though an amateur group, usually turn out fairly professional work (last years “The Cripple Of Inishmaan” being a good example) I was, however, disappointed with this offering. The set was too complex, the plot hard to follow and the script so full of gratuitous swearing it should have had an X rating. The blame is not solely that of Quarry who did well with a bad script. Marina Carr when writing this had obviously never heard of Dramaturgy. Her plot was inconsistent and her style patchy. An example being how, after the main characters death in the first half, the story went back in time in the second. I must say the standard of acting was good with fine performances from all 9 actors in their respective roles. The set though a little complicated, was imaginative and used every inch of available stage space."
